The Grand LA – Phase 1
Located in the heart of Los Angeles’ Cultural District, the Grand LA stands as a testament to architectural brilliance and engineering ingenuity. Designed by legendary architect Frank Gehry, this large-scale mixed-use development is a landmark project and the pinnacle of his storied career. Spanning an entire city block directly across from Gehry’s iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Grand LA features two stunning towers sharing a single structural base: the 28-story Conrad Los Angeles luxury hotel and the 45-story residential tower, The Grand by Gehry. Completed in July 2022, this transformative project has redefined the downtown Los Angeles skyline.

Project Overview
Schuff Steel played a pivotal role in the successful completion of The Grand LA, showcasing its expertise in structural steel fabrication and erection. Schuff’s scope included the intricate bridge and podium steel, which featured large 48-inch tubular columns erected over rebar cages and 65-foot curved trusses for the bridge. The curved trusses presented one of the project’s greatest challenges, requiring innovative detailing, fabrication, and erection methods. To enhance constructability, Schuff collaborated on the design of these trusses, which were pre-assembled on the ground and flown into place as single units.
The fabrication process, which included 12 trusses from Schuff’s Phoenix shop (the heaviest weighing 61,500 lbs.) and five additional trusses fabricated at the Eloy shop, highlighted Schuff’s advanced capabilities. In total, the project encompassed 11,851 shop hours and 4,919 field hours, incorporating 412 beams, 36 columns, six bearing pads, and four 48-inch round columns with couplers for concrete and rebar shop attached to cap plates.
The Grand LA’s engineering complexity and architectural significance earned it the 2023 ENR Southern California Best Project award in the Residential/Hospitality category. By combining innovation, precision, and teamwork, Schuff Steel helped bring Frank Gehry’s ambitious vision for The Grand LA to life, contributing to a project that celebrates the intersection of art, engineering, and urban living.
